You're not saying how old netbsd.old is, but since it doesn't know the
boot device, I would guess the new kernel wants a newer bootloader.

I also vaguely recall some discussion (about a month or two ago) concerning raidframe-as-root. Perhaps you could search for that, and try a kernel that predates those changes?
