Using both grep and awk in the same pipeline is just silly...
ls -lo ./$${file} | awk '$$5 ~ /schg/ { exit 0 } { exit 1 }'
or
ls -lo ./$${file} | awk '$$5 ~ /schg/ { print $$10 }'
