I couldn't get the snapshot to work:

/cygdrive/c/builds/ghc-6.4.1 > ./bin/i386-unknown-mingw32/ghc
ghc.exe: Can't find package.conf as

c:\builds\ghc-6.4.1\bin\i386-unknown-min\ghc\driver\package.conf.inplace

(notice the missing "gw32", I have no idea what's gone wrong here).

The "i386-unknown-mingw32" directory doesn't exist in the binary distrib snapshots of STABLE or HEAD, so I'm assuming you're referring to a local build here. Looks like you haven't run the post binary-dist prep script, distrib/prep-bin-dist-mingw.

No, I'm referring to a snapshot. This one, in fact:

http://www.haskell.org/ghc/dist/stable/dist/ghc-6.4.1-i386-unknown-mingw
32.tar.bz2

or is that the wrong one... perhaps I should be using

http://www.haskell.org/ghc/dist/stable/dist/ghc-6.4.1.20050507-i386-unkn
own-mingw32.tar.gz

which was dropped 5 minutes later, and appears to be 20M larger?

Oh, the .bz2 shouldn't have been uploaded as part of the build. The difference
in size isn't just due to the use of different compressors, the .bz2 version doesn't
contain any external tools & libs either.
