Made extra checks so when debugging is enabled, it doesn't crash on Solaris
while trying to print strings which are NULL.
Fixes bug #305645 [http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=305645].
Committed the patch on Dinoop's behalf.
