We definitely support a critical appraisal and overhaul of the
path-handling and installation machinery, as you say it's grown over the
years into a tangled mess, and the addition of Cabal to the mix has perhaps
toppled it over the edge. Having said that, Ian has heroically managed to
more or less make it all work for this release.
Given that we're not going to make any major changes for this release, we
have a bit of time to think about this properly. Let's write some good
wiki content describing what we want to do, and how the pieces fit
together. I often find that trying to write it down reveals
inconsistencies or opportunities for designing something in a nicer way.
Would you care to make a start on it? Leave holes where necessary
(Windows?) and we'll fill them in.
