Yuk! There is a ticket on adding a prefix form of (#,#), which is
currently lacking. Perhaps adding that first, then moving to the
unboxed thingy would be best.
that sounds like a good idea anyway, although it would not help my
present issue unless I'm willing to disable the unboxed FastTypes with
GHC < 6.9 , which would likely be disastrous for the speed of a stage1
compiled with -O0...
