This just means your compiler was compiled with -DDEBUG. Ideally we should
have a flag for disabling debugging output for use when running the test
suite, otherwise -DDEBUG is less useful than it should be. If we did this,
then arguably validate should use -DDEBUG... but it will slow things down.
