John Dias and I propose to commit a very large batch of changes to the code generator and Cmm, to the HEAD, shortly. The baseline setup will be to continue to use the old codegen path, but the new path will be available too. In due course we'll flip the bit, so that the default is to use the new path. Then a while after that we'll remove the old path and its associated cruft.
Any objections? The changes are mostly in cmm/ and codeGen/. Nothing should stop working. The only bad thing is that bug-fixes in those directories will be harder to merge to the 6.10 branch.
