Don't think it is a Mac problem. The relevant code is right *after* the code that distinguishes architectures and, if I am not overlooking anything, the variable `n' isn't defined for any architecture.

Looks to me like it's in a !defined(USE_MMAP) block, and thus isn't
compiled on at least Linux.
