EARTH ACTION: Emergency Appeal
2010 EI Mid-Year Fund-Raiser: 25% raised 43 donors, $37,362 to go

May 19, 2010

Dear colleagues,

After an initial surge, Ecological Internet’s (EI) mid-year fund-raiser appears
to have stalled at 25% to our goal. There is still time for you to donate, yet
this is most dangerous to our future prospects. We are at an all time low on
funding, due to a number of unique circumstances (below). The fate of the
largest, most effective global network committed to ecological sustainability
is in your hands. Please donate as soon as you can $50 or what you can afford
at: http://www.rainforestportal.org/shared/donate/ .

Ecological Internet has just been served papers in a civil SLAPP lawsuit meant
to silence our voice. We are going to need funds to fight this lawsuit which
comes from the coal industry and seeks to take away our domains and close our
sites. Over the past year EI incurred major expenses to establish the Asples
Madang project in Papua New Guinea. There we have established a fully staffed,
office complex working on three major campaigns. In doing so we went tens of
thousands of dollars into debt.

Increasingly EI’s biocentric, deep ecology message is getting through;
threatening reformist NGOs, Earth destroying industries and their government.
The fact that opposition is growing reveals we are influential and having a
major impact. Yet our funding base remains small despite major growth in our
network. Unless together we can raise more funding we risk losing the following:

1.) The only global campaign to end primary forest logging, just as its
effectiveness soars. There will be no one to counter myth that sustainable
forest management is desirable in old forests.

2.) The world’s leading environmental portals which provide unequaled
biocentric newsfeed, portal search, analysis and action items. There is nothing
like http://www.ecoearth.info/ and http://forests.org/ on the net, but they may
be closing.

3.) The only major global network accurately assessing the depth of ecological
crises, and fearlessly providing and promoting solutions adequate to achieve
global ecological sustainability.

4.) The nearly completed and forthcoming book “New Earth Rising: Revolutionary
Options to Achieve Global Ecological Sustainability” which is political ecology
analysis and will begin to be serialized on the http://www.NewEarthRising.org/
web site on June 1st.

Frankly, we need EI as a global grassroots rallying hub for truly sufficient
global ecological policy. And one that is free from the corrupting influences
of foundation and celebrity funding. Yet unless fund-raising picks up, I will
be unable to continue running Ecological Internet, and will shut down after
exhausting funds that are raised. Sadly this is not an empty threat, as we are
nearly bankrupt after an extremely demanding year that saved Indian elephants,
Brazilian Amazon from oil palm, and Madagascar’s hardwoods.

A huge amount has been achieved over 15 years with raw energy and excitement.
It would be a shame for this deep ecology affinity network to cease to exist
because $37,500 could not be raised. Heck that is the travel budget of one big
NGO staff person. Please, donate what you can now for global grassroots
ecosystem advocacy at: http://www.rainforestportal.org/shared/donate/

Warm regards,
Dr. Glen Barry
President, Ecological Internet
