One option is to make the error messages more useful. Maybe print a paragraph of information. There are about 5 to 10 error messages that pop up all the time (just scan the newsgroups) such as "recv() from server" and it would help to explain what probably has caused them and how to fix them. I think this was discussed in the CVS newsgroup about 6 months ago.
