on windows, i always just use AVG, from http://www.grisoft.com. it's free, but
not open. or, for $30, you get 2 yrs of protection AND auto-updates.

For $65.00 you can get Libranet and not have to mess with any of that stuff.

Or download Knoppix for free and buy a USB thumb drive for $65:

Boot the CD and save settings on the thumb drive. Or boot from the thumbdrive.

But I'm spending time with some Windows people, and they are not going to change their OS any time soon. So I figure I can at least introduce them to FireFox, Thunderbird, OpenOffice.org, MySQL, and other FLOSS that runs on Windows. FLOSS has many of the major applications pretty well covered on Windows. Anti-virus and Anti-spyware is the next logical extension.

Of course another solution to protect yourself once you've been attacked is the three partition method:

 part 1: Windows
 part 2: Extended
 part 5: Hidden Windows

Part 5 contains a single file: a compressed image of part 1. Boot Knoppix and then 'zcat /dev/hda5/hda1.img | dd of=/dev/hda1'
