According to Distrowatch.com, K/Ubuntu 5.10, "Breezy Badger", has been released[1,2]. What's nice about the Ubuntu releases is that they have both an install and LiveCD, both of which run on x86, x86_64, and PPC (aka Mac) hardware. Hopefully, I'll have them downloaded by the time the meeting starts.
According to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LiveCDFeatures , persistent home directory as a feature is an "outstanding issue". So I guess the answer is "no" or "DIY".
