I never have trouble using the apps from one on another so I'm guessing that the people are ranting are developers who are unhappy with trying to make an app act the same way under both desktops.
But so what. Do they complain because they can't make the app work the same way when they port to windows? that's obviously not easy when using KDE or GNome libs. If they want to work out some common api for both desktops great! more power to them but shut up and just do it.
