Ran into a nasty bug? in TBird. Lets say you are keeping old messages
around in server IMAP folders that you filter msgs into. First, do not
delete those physical IMAP folders on the server. TBird looses track* of
them. Or the IMAP daemon does. Or you may have to restart the IMAP
daemon, not sure which.

I recently went through a end-of-year purge, but tried to take the short
cut by manually deleting the folders on the server.

While this situation persisted, I had a another very annoying issue. I
hadn't yet deleted my filters that were set to deliver these messages to
their folders. So messages were coming in, but had no real folder to be
moved to. They were stuck in some kind of limbo (a valid IT term, even
if no longer recognized by the Vatican.) They did not appear in my
Inbox. or anywhere else. As soon as I delete the filters, on the next
round-trip to d/l email from the servers, they all instantly showed up
in my Inbox. It was annoying because my little Systray icon flashed on
every d/l saying I had mail, but I could not see it.

To fix the deleted folders thing, I did a touch of each folder in the
with the same name, then I could delete them in TBird. (mkdir if using
maildir style folders.)

But I ran into another problem, which I think is a real TBird bug. If
you have created an IMAP account, it sets up a Trash folder for you.
This folder is a normal IMAP folder. If you want to delete a folder, it
seems to want to rename this folder, then it complains there already is
a folder named Trash. So I temporarily renamed that folder to Old-Trash.
Then I went into the account settings and told it to merely mark deleted
items as "deleted" rather than move to Trash (no other options except
delete immediately.) You need to do this if you plan on moving stuff
around or have filters that automatically delete messages.

Now I was able to delete old folders (the ones I had previously deleted
by hand) It moves them to under your account folder and then you can
permanently delete them. Finally, I renamed the OldTrash to Trash and
reset my delete rule to "move to Trash".

BTW, you can leave the "mark as deleted" option on and periodically
rt-click the folder and choose "Compact" to get rid of them permanently.

Not sure what the issue is with an IMAP Trash folder and trying to
delete other folders. I am using v 1.5

To Recap:
Don't take any shortcuts.
First unsubscribe from your mailing list.
Next delete the filter.
Then delete the mail (IMAP) folder using TBird (really telling IMAP to
do it for you.)
If you have the problem with the TBird created Trash folder, move it out
of the way temporarily.

* I think this may be due to the fact that TBird has cached headers.
This could just be a UW-IMAP thing. ?!?
