I don't think you can easily use something else - as far as I know, pango
is the component of GTK that handles text rendering. I don't know anything
about its 'modules', though.

Doesn't sound related. I'd guess your Ubuntu users will just get 'old
style' scrollbars instead of the new 'overlay' scrollbars, which isn't
really a big deal.
