Although some may feel Vassal is CB's competition I don't see it that way.
The Vassal folks have been doing great work and certainly have built a nice
developer community. They have decent amount of momentum as well.

My personal opinion is that CB does strict PBEM better than Vassal in a
much smaller package. I think CB is pretty good for really large monster
games as well. For live play it's definitely Vassal and wargameroom. Best
part is our systems are they are all free of charge (donations
not-withstanding)!

I guess since most of the games played on these programs are consim stuff
it's not hard to see why people think everything is a competition. ;)
