I use an external monitor on my laptop (Vista) but I do not stretch the video out due to different sized screens. I use dual monitors at work with XP but seldom spread anything across the monitors due to the space inbetween them.
In Vista the command to use an Extended Desktop is (on the desktop) Right-Mouse (on the Context Menu) GRAPHICS OPTIONS OUTPUT TO EXTENDED DESKTOP I get an additional option to make the Notebook or the Monitor as the main screen.
