Normally, you automatically own them when they are in your personal  
card hand.
When putting a card from the hand to the table you "own" it and need  
to remove
the ownership to be able to show the card to the other player.

Owning a card usually (I think) sets the card face down for all other  
players.
When releasing ownership, you can have it face up or down as you wish.

To release or se ownership, right click on the card to bring up the  
menu.
