Senate Judiciary Approves Tools To Fight Computer Hackers October 6, 2000 10:55 am Eastern Time National Journal's CongressDaily Copyright 2000 The National Journal Group, Inc. After months of negotiations, the Senate Judiciary Committee approved compromise legislation Thursday that would give federal crime fighters new ammunition to fight hackers and other computer crooks, National Journal News Service reported. The bill, approved by a 15-1 margin, was a compromise worked out among Judiciary Chairman Hatch and Sens. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt. and Charles Schumer, D-N.Y. Schumer noted the bill takes the most noncontroversial sections of the original legislation to give federal authorities new tools to combat cybercrimes. The bill includes an earlier provision that gives federal investigators and prosecutors wiretapping authority to battle felonious cybercrimes. It also creates a position for a deputy assistant attorney general with authority over computer and intellectual property crimes, and a National Cyber Crime Technical Support Center would be established to educate and train local and state investigators in fighting computer crimes. unsubscribe: cybercrime-alerts [EMAIL PROTECTED] subscribe: [EMAIL PROTECTED] url: http://theMezz.com/alerts ___________________________________________________________ T O P I C A The Email You Want. http://www.topica.com/t/16 Newsletters, Tips and Discussions on Your Favorite Topics
