"Tech Skills Help Investigators; Computer Forensics Is a Field
Full of Opportunities"
Kansas City Star (04/01/01) P. D17; Grothaus, Margaret

As the use of technology in law enforcement continues to grow,
so does the need for expert investigators who know how to find
their way through computer data. Kansas City-based Clarence M.
Kelley and Associates Inc., an investigation and security
firm, recently started up a high-tech investigative unit. The
team is headed by Rich Marchewka, whose responsibilities
include performing forensic examinations on computers and
guarding evidence for use in court. The company is hired to
investigate claims of fraud and theft, to locate assets,
perform background checks, and more. Marchewka's professional
background includes a stint in the Marines, time as an
investigator with a sheriff's department, and two decades of
service with the Kansas Bureau of Investigation. "Several
different backgrounds could take someone in the direction of
computer forensics," he notes. "And no matter how you get
there, there'll be plenty of jobs." Marchewka recommends that
persons interested in this field of work build a background in
law enforcement, criminal justice, accounting or law, as well
as develop some experience in computer science.
