By Joe Berkofsky, TechTV News June 8, 2001 Cell phone users beware: Your most private wireless conversations could wind up on the Internet for the world to see. That's what happened to some cell phone users in Ottawa this week, when a mysterious website called cellphonescanner.com intercepted calls and posted them online as audio files. That would be illegal in the United States, which forbids the surveillance of cell phone calls by anyone other than law enforcement and government agencies. In Canada, however, there is no law against scanning radio frequencies, which carry analog cell phone transmissions. The site, which, according to the Ottawa Sun, claims to be "the Internet's first live streaming broadcast of cellular phone conversations," went down once the report appeared Thursday morning. The site reportedly included a legal disclaimer warning users that it is illegal to use cell phone data for "personal gain" or "malicious purposes." The person behind the site was an apparently fictitious area resident named Mike Smith, according to the Sun's report. TechTV discovered that the site is registered to the name "Mike Zabadougalam" from "Grand, Cayman, KY."
