The anthrax bacillus can form spores in times of stress.  These are 
virtually indestructable - it's been shown for instance that they could 
easily suvive a few years in space on a metorite blasted from a planets 
surface - and make the mars-earth journey for example.

Don't make the mistake of thinking that bacteria are a just a type of animal 
- like mammals.  There's considerably more variation across all the 
organisms we describe as bacteria than there is for the whole of the rest of 
life on the planet put together.
