From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] COURT DECISION `SOON' ON POLICE SHOOTING DEATH 270907 AUG 10 By Damien Pearse, Crime Correspondent, PA News A decision on whether to prosecute police officers who shot dead a man who was carrying a table leg - which they thought was a gun - could be announced this week, it emerged today. Father-of-three Harry Stanley was killed by two police officers near his home in Hackney, east London, after walking back from his local pub. Police were alerted by a pub customer who dialled 999 claiming that Scots-born Mr Stanley, 46, was carrying a sawn-off shotgun. He had, in fact, just been to collect the chair leg from his brother Pete, who was a carpenter and had repaired the piece of furniture. Mr Stanley's family say they were not told of the death until at least 18 hours later. A report was sent to the Crown Prosecution Service by the Police Complaints Authority earlier this year. A spokesman for the CPS said: "This matter has been given consideration and a decision on whether criminal charges should follow should be announced soon." The two officers involved in the incident were suspended from operational duties following the shooting and given desk jobs. Mr Stanley's eldest son, Jason, said the family would press for a public inquiry if the officers were not charged. The 27-year-old said his father was recovering from surgery to cure his colon cancer when the shooting took place in September last year. The CPS refused to comment on what charges were being considered against the officers. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ When did this incident occur? Kenneth Pantling -- It was quite a while ago, about a year as I recall. Steve.
