      Stop and search stepped up

Police in Manchester are to increase their use of stop
and search powers as part of an initiative against street
crime. Operation Hawk, backed by a Home Office grant of
L3.2 million, aims to double the force's robbery reduction
target during the next five years. There was a 10 per cent
rise in street robbery in Manchester last year, with more
than 7,000 incidents.
Police named the victim of a "gangland" style killing
on Saturday in the Longsight area as Marcus Greenidge, 21.
He was shot in the head as he rode on a mountain bike with
a friend.

A cow was shot dead by a police marksman at the end
of a two-hour hunt after the animal escaped from a cattle
market and ran along the High Street in Shaftesbury,
Dorset. Armed police units were deployed by helicopter and
the Friesian was shot three times after being cornered in
a field.
