I wrote to my MP a while ago to complain about the licensing system and
the increasingly crass BBC. He passed my comments on to Chris Smith who,
to cut a load of waffle short, simply restated the corporation's
obligations regarding impartiality, accuracy etc.

In answer to my comments on being forced to buy a licence even if only
receiving ET or cable transmissions, he came up with this,

< The licence fee is therefore a payment for permission to receive
television broadcasts and not for a service provided. >

I am disappointed that Chris Smith feels able to put his signature to
this for these reasons:

1.
It is not truthful. The licence fee goes to the BBC to fund its
activities, he can claim otherwise but it simply does not stand up to
scrutiny.

2.
For what purpose would TV broadcasts be restricted to licences holders
only? Why should a government that calls for cheap or free Internet
access want to restrict access to TV? Why should any government want to
restrict access to TV? Why should TV receivers be licensed?

3.
He is insulting my intelligence.
