Lethal - yes: to spiders, ants etc (mice? rats? at close range?) .
Barrelled - yes.
Weapon - yes: designed or used to inflict harm - see lethal.
So airsoft guns are firearms.
Do the general public see airsoft or other spring or cold gas guns as
firearms? - or is there an expectation that firearms involves some
pyrotechnic (pyro = fire) element?

The HO say that airsoft guns don't fall under the Firearms Act, so
on that basis I suppose local laws could be passed controlling them.
The term "firearm" includes guns powered by compressed air or
CO2, but airsoft guns simply don't have the power to be lethal.
