Deborah Coles is right (No trial for police who shot
painter, December 5). The abject decision of the crown
prosecution service to take no further proceedings against
any Metropolitan police officer for their shooting of our
neighbour Harry Stanley deprives the citizens of London of
an accountable police force. It is not for the CPS to decide
that shooting Harry twice was "...as much force as was necessary".

It is for a jury to decide. Not only on the guilt or innocence
of the two firearms officers, but also of the other officers who
inadequately assessed the fatally wrong intelligence they
received. The people of London deserve better than for the CPS
to give a green light to summary execution on the street.

Perhaps mayor Livingstone's proposals for independent judicial
review of killings by police will be the answer. But we in
Hackney can't wait. Tomorrow the Justice for Harry Stanley
Campaign is meeting to debate the issues and continue the
endeavour to obtain truth, justice and restitution for Harry's
bereaved family.
