Stray horses on motorway are shot dead
By David Sapsted

THREE horses, part of a group that has been roaming and causing
chaos on the roads for two months, have been shot dead by police.
They were shot after they ran on to the A13 in Essex and headed
for the M25. In recent weeks, the same horses and several others
have been causing chaos in the Tilbury area, straying on to roads
and into gardens. A girl was bitten by one. Another of the animals,
all believed to have been abandoned by travellers, was put down
after being struck by a car.

In the most bizarre incident, six of them attempted to barge through
the electric doors at an Asda supermarket, apparently attracted by
the smell of baking bread. An employee lured them into a nearby
field. A steep increase in the price of feed is believed to have
been behind a large rise recently in the number of horses being
abandoned, particularly in Essex.

Although animal welfare groups criticised the shootings, Supt Ian
Gruneberg said: "We had no choice. Would you rather see a serious
accident on a major road or three dead horses?"

A Thurrock council spokesman said most of the remaining horses had
been penned in a field. "At the moment the problem seems to be
resolved," he added.

A example of convenience rather than necessity perhaps?
