Man shot in head by garden intruder

      BY RUSSELL JENKINS

A MAN was critically ill in hospital yesterday after
he was shot in the head when he investigated a noise in
his garden.
Ian Vaughan, 37, was woken in the early hours by the
disturbance at the back of his house in Runcorn, Cheshire.
His dog was barking.

Mr Vaughan's wife hurried downstairs after hearing a
loud bang and found her husband lying on the ground with
blood flowing from a head wound caused by a shotgun blast.
He was taken to Warrington General Hospital where he was
in a stable condition last night.

      The couple's 13-year-old son and eight-year-old
daughter were asleep in the house at the time of the attack.

Detectives are trying to establish whether Mr Vaughan
knew the attacker, who is not thought to have been
attempting a burglary. They hope to interview Mr Vaughan as
soon as possible.

Police sealed off the drive and garden of the detached
four-bedroom house, which is on a newly built estate on the
outskirts of the town.

Scene of crime officers searched a large area of public
land behind the house, including a children's playground.
