In a recent report in the Western Daily Press, the League's ex-chief executive Graham Sirl, now head of their 'West Country Operations' was quoted as saying: "If you look at the cruelty involved in pheasant shooting, the way the animals are reared, the way wildlife is systematically destroyed, and the actual killing and wounding of the birds, it is clear that this is another so called sport which has to be abolished" Commenting on this statement, Nigel Henson, Director of Communications at the Alliance, said: "Graham Sirl's comments end years of the League ducking the issue about shooting. We now know for sure that animal rights activists, and their unnamed financial backers, will turn their attention to the other country sports. One of the reasons hunting has received such robust support from the shooting world is because they saw through antis' feeble attempt to mislead the public, believing that attacking hunting would lead to an assault on shooting." "But now the truth is out. The intentions of the League, in addition to those already declared by the Hunt Saboteurs Association, will send a shiver down the spine of the Government. Politicians who voted for a hunting ban will now have to face an even bigger problem than they thought. They will need to explain their own illogical position with greater care.
