Pete W., Steve B., David D. and I just completed CNC 2008 today. 7 days of cycling from Black Mountain to Oak Island. I will still be pedaling in my sleep tonight. This was the most difficult CNC that I have ever done. The sand hills in Southern N.C. kept us hurting 5 days into the tour. Many claiming the 5th day as the hardest as we combined longer miles with still more elevation. Steve was in top form after practicing all summer with simi inflated tires. That high intensity training paid off. Pete was as constant as ever. Always complaining about having a slow day but consistantely finished the ride each day easily in the top 30% of the field. As for David, the ride had a whole different meaning. It was an excuse to throw down a few, and a few he did. I mostly stayed clear of that side of camp. I simply just couldn't hang with'em. I did the century option this year for the first time on day 6. I hooked up with a couple riders from the Asheville area and for the first 63 miles we kept the needle between 21 and 23 stopping just long enough for water. We finally ran out of people to pass at the 63 mile rest stop as we were the first to arrive out of a thousand riders. The rest stop was at a winery in which my new pals from Asheville were very interested. With beer being my preferred drink, I slipped out the back door and completed the 103 mile ride solo without seeing another cyclist. We all had a great time with no mishaps from our group. This was Pete's 9th year in a row of completing CNC.
