*About this project*:
Cigarette litter on our local beaches in an environmental nightmare. I (with
the help of my 3 young children and husband) recently began doing 20 minute
beach clean-ups with a focus of counting cigarette butts and with the
mission to help get smoking banned from our local beach. Whenever we're
picking up butts most people think we're collecting sea shells... then we
show them our buckets. It's no secret that cigarette butts are the #1
littered item worldwide... but could anyone ever fathom that I'd pick up
2,937 cigarette butts in just 9 days. That's an average of 326 butts per day
or about 16 butts picked up every minute. Of course, I'm on a mission to get
smoking banned from my local beach... but it doesn't end there because where
there are smokers there is butt litter... education, disposal receptacles,
and proper signage are all key. Cigarette butt litter is a problem because
they are made from plastics: marine animals and birds mistake them for food,
they poison our water, they collect harmful contaminants... the list is a
long one. Check out what I'm doing here:

*Why this project should be made into a short film*:
Cigarette butts are the #1 littered item worldwide. As I pick them up on the
beach and talk to people while doing so... 99% of people are unaware that
the filters are made from plastic. The misconception: cigarette filters are
made from cotton. The more people are educated... the more people understand
the problem with butts in the environment... the more people will make
changes.
