Bob Dillon and I traveled to the big city of Gulf, NC (just north of Sanford) today to participate in the CARA Ride for their Lives supporting animal rescue in Lee and adjacent counties. The ride started at a nice park on the Deep River and covered the rolling hills of Chatham, Lee and Moore counties. The route had a great mix of flats, rolling hills and just enough challenging hills to keep it very interesting. Bob D kicked the ride off with a strong leadout with a large peleton of about 80 riders in pursuit. Alas, a repeat of the Pickle ride was not to be as both CoWs fell back behind the hammerheads and proceeded at a more moderate pace. We finished strong with about an 18.2 mph average for the 62.8 miles. After the ride, the organizers provided a nice barbeque lunch with liquid refreshment from Carolina Brewing Company and a band to entertain the group.
I highly recommend this ride in future years. The course and volunteers were wonderful. The first rest area was at a historic home that the homeowner opened up for the riders. The second was at a state historic site honoring a Revolutionary War battle. The third came after the hilliest section of the course and it didn’t matter where it was. We didn’t stop after that although there were more opportunities. We couldn’t ask for better weather. Derek...We ended up riding the last half of the ride with the captain of your Tour de Cure team. She’s still as strong on the hills as she was in Raleigh earlier in the year. And, yes, she’s still recruiting more riders. It was a fantastic day to ride. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "CyclistsOfWilson-COWs" group. To post to this group, send email to [email protected].
