Ran another half marathon this past weekend in an area that some of you
will be very familiar with -- Valle Crucis. Race started at the same
Valle Crucis Elementary school as the annual BSG century ride.

This was certainly a much more laid back race than the Rock n Roll half
marathon in Virginia Beach. It's a small group of contenders from all
over the US who turned up for this self-proclaimed "On the Edge of
Extreme" race in the mountains. The mountains and gravel roads were
tough, but the views were amazing! I drove back along the course after
the race to take pictures since I said over and over "darn I wish I had
a camera" while I was running. Good thing I didn't or I wouldn't have
finished in 2:02, third in my age group. Not too bad for a girl who
thinks that an overpass counts as a 'mountain' here in Wilson, NC.

Also met the author, Christopher McDougal, who wrote the best seller
"Born to Run" (he's taller in person!)who came out at packet pickup.
ASU had chosen his book as the 2011 student book of the year, and gave
out copies to every student at the start of this semester. It's a great
book if any of you are interested in reading about some of the most
extreme ultra marathon races -- and the kooky cast of characters who run
and love them!

Those of you who compete in the BSG shared some of the same roads as
this race and can attest to the challenge and beauty of these mountains.
It's a great race, I'll certainly return next year, and I'd highly
recommend it to anyone interested in a challenging and beautiful course
to run a half or full marathon without all of the crowds and craziness
that comes with some of the bigger races.

6 weeks and counting down to the Marine Corps Marathon -- October 30th.
Anyone is welcome to join me for all or part of my 19 mile run this
Saturday morning!!
