Nice report Jeff, but you missed the monster pull that Clean Bike guy did from
Silver Lake to Vaughans Chapel...into the wind. Excellent job LR. The
training is paying off.

As for that single speed legend, I know that I hit 27 and was falling back from
both of you. I’m glad you guys didn’t get that excited earlier on the ride.

The weather was perfect again today with the exception of the headwind early.
Unbelievable for Christmas Eve eve. Looking forward to more traditional
temperatures tomorrow.

Subject: [COWs] Friday's Ride & Cycling 101 !!!

WILSON: Oh boy! Three riders rolled out of DD at 9:00 am today, Tim, Bob L.
and LR (yes with a clean bike ) under partly cloudy skies and into the WIND.
The wind we experienced yesterday was but a warm up for today. The group
headed out Nash St and head on into the wind. Turning left on Clifftonville
Rd/Tar River Church Rd. The ride continued across 97 and left on to Bend of
the River turning left again on to Vaughn Chapel Rd. The head wind and rolling
up hill terrain was challenging to say the least, good thing Tim was in the
pull, on a single speed none the less. The group turned left on to Sandy Cross
Rd and got a bit of relief from the wind as it was now a cross wind and not
head on. We rolled into the gas station at 58 for a well earned rest stop.
During the first half of the ride the peloton could see the sky clearing in the
distance and by now it was mostly sunny although a bit cooler and no less
windy. At the stop Tim shared that he seemed to max out at around 20 or so one
then single speed, hmmmmmm. Continuing on, the group continued across 58, to
West Mont Dr. turning on to S. Old Carriage Rd. At this point the tail wind
began to kick in. By the time we cross Bend of the River we were rolling along
all smiles. Turning left onto 97 reminded us that the wind was still there. A
right on London Church put the wind at our back and rolling again. Tim takes
the pull and a miracle happened! That 20 mph single speed could suddenly do 23
– 24 and the party rolled. Turning left on Lake Wilson with Tim still pulling
we cleared the hills at a 19 – 20 pace. A right onto Nash and new pavement got
that single speed all excited as the pace took off, 25 –26. Tim finally pulls
to the outside and eases off as we approach DD. Clearly the motor on that
single speed ready. The ride pulled into DD with 29 miles and a average just
under 18. The ride was topped off with coffee and post ride analysis. A
strong steady pace, great day to be on a bike.

Heard from the DD management yesterday that a bike rack is one the way.

Jingle Bell ride tomorrow! 9:00 am at DD. It will be more Christmas like in
the morning, looking for a big turnout. Who is in?

Bob L. and I learned today (and I thought I knew it all) that a clean bicycle
slices through a headwind much easier than bikes with a lot of crud from
yesterdays rain event. That's our story anyway. This is not a "ride report",
just an observation from Jeff's monster pull today! I'm now going out to clean
my bike!
