Another rando, Bryan R. from Gardner wanted to ride my Lake Gaston Route today.
Sure I'll ride with you I say. We left out at 8:00am from Wilson, headed
north into a stiff headwind and 35 degrees. We cruised a leisurely pace
towards Gasburg Va. We get to Lake Gaston and there's a light rain and the
sign in front of the Lake Gaston Fire Dept. reads 35.8 degrees. Well at least
I got to use my fenders but they didn't keep me from freezing. What happened
to the 45 degree forecast. I was wet and getting dangerously cold. I couldn't
stop the shakes whenever we stopped. Gloves were soaked and useless. Ended up
stuffing a couple of real estate magazines under my jersey to work on my core
temps, wrapped up my gloves in plastic bags. Water proof shoes with chemical
heaters were the only thing working for me today. I then had to keep my heart
rate up. I left Bryan just after Lake Gaston because I wasn't gonna make it
home at a leisure pace, I had to go, and not stop. At least it stopped raining
and the temp did rise to 39 degrees by the time I got back to Wilson but it was
dark and getting foggy. I got in my car and headed back up the route to make
sure Bryan was ok as we were both struggling there there for a while.
Satisfied with his condition I cruised home to another wonderful Sunday dinner.
Another 130 miles in the books. Learned a few survival lessons today. I
guess it was worth it. I dunno.
