Nope - the case was that the aclocal wrapper searches for AC_PREREQ to decide which version to use, but the configure.in did not contain one, so the wrapper picked the development version which was not installed. I was configuring the CommonC++ 2 library v 0.99.1 and its configure script has a check for aclocal which was hanging - this way I found the problem.
