Perhaps so.  I'll certainly look closer at it when I get some more free
time, if you don't solve it first.  Right now, I have to get back to work
(my lunch break is ending).

So, except for the warnings, bunzip2 likes the files before and
after the unpack, and is just vocal about the original .bz2?  Did
you keep a copy of the original, to compare the before-and-after files?

Yes, I used tar-1.15.90-1 to package coreutils-5.94-5 on a binary
cygwin mount, then used the same cygwin version of tar to create a
bzip2 compressed upload to a stdout pipe to a matching tar on
sourceware.org unpacking from stdin to do my upload.
