Many thanks for your response and for your patience.

Cygcheck (something I have not used before) told me I don't seem to have 
minires or xml, even though I thought I did -- my mistake!

httpd2 then started fine... all I needed was to run rebaseall (again, 
something new to me) and I'm now looking at the output of phpinfo() 
instead of the source :)

Now to try mySQL ;)
