Hello
I am a newbie to this mailing list and to cygwin ports (but experienced with
cygwin), so I am not sure if these topics have been covered.
First of all, I intended to install kde, gnome (to try each out), R, some
math packages, and some languages like python, php, and java. I didn't want
anywhere close to the whole of cygwin ports, yet the total download size was
still enough for a DVD (nearly 3 gigs). I really only chose about 6-7 broad
categories of packages out of the 30 or so present. I didn't feel that I
should micro-analyze each package for whether I "need" it (even among the
chosen categories, there are still hundreds of them), since choosing
"everything" worked for the original cygwin when I installed it.
After editing xinit accordingly, X crashed when I attempted to run gdm or
kde4. I could run fvwm2, but that was in the original cygwin distro, which
did in fact install properly, and has the expected bahaviour.
I would suggest that this be treated as a bug. I don't think I should be
made to download an entire distribution over again for the failure of a
single package. The setup should track these packages in some way that the
problem can be corrected manually later. I checked setup.log.full and didn't
see anything unusual among the thousands of packages there. I chose to
continue, ignoring all errors, null files, and so on; which happened seldom.
Here is a partial list:
- gnome-chem
- libgcj
- libgthex-*
- libconv2
- libintl
- libxcb-sync
- php-mlt
- python3-pyqt4
- qt4-4.5.3-*-src
I am indeed going to start this again, but the distro took up so much hard
drive space that I think I will load it on to a memory stick. The Cygwin
distro will have to go on a DVD before I even think of installing.
The 6 or so package categories I chose was larger than the cygwin distro
itself. In that distro, I installed *everything*, and it was still seemingly
1-2 gigs.
