This was a bug. The code for detecting the mouse button count was added lately to support mice with > 3 buttons. But mice with < 3 buttons were not handled correctly. I've changed this: XWin always assumes the mouse has 3 buttons (Left, Middle, Right) and the scroll wheel. This sums up to 5 mouse buttons for XWin (4 and 5 are wheel up and wheel down). Any additional mouse button is added as button 6, 7, 8 and so on.
