Ctrl-space seems to work. Try
od -xc
and then press Ctrl-space a few times, followed by some characters,
ENTER and Ctrl-D. Here's what happens when I enter the
characters
a a Ctrl-space Ctrl-space Ctrl-space Ctrl-space z <cr> ^D
$ od -xc
aaz
