I'd think you should quote the exclude regex like '*~' or \*~, but otherwise this certainly looks appealing. Sorry for bringing up another issue: is it intended that KEEPDIRS produces .keep-<package> files in the install? I thought that these should not end up in the installer, but only prevent the removal of empty directories, but maybe I misunderstood.
