I just tried the latest 32 bit snapshot: CYGWIN_NT-6.3-WOW64 1.7.29s(0.272/5/3) 20140310 03:20:19 and I can't reproduce this crash running startxwin. I removed my /etc/nsswitch.conf file to use the default settings throughout for the passwd/group stuff for testing, but it also works fine with passwd: db group: db db_enum: all What are you settings?
