In answer to my own query, after compiling and installing a snapshot, ensuring an unstripped cygwin1.dll was installed, and setting a breakpoint at and stopping at main, then breakpoints could be set within cygwin library In fact though a bit frustrated yesterday, today i'm quite impressed.
