Well, FWIW, I can confirm that everything I've tried also produces the
transliteration of the umlauts (I used "gettext --help" as my test app).
The next step would probably be for you to install the "gettext-devel"
package and play with the message extraction functions and locale settings
until you hit on one that works...  Sorry I couldn't be of more help.
