The default /etc/profile for the 1.1.4 version of CygWin chokes when
HOME is defined including blanks. The solution is to quote the
reference to $HOME in line 14:
IPALOU$ diff profile profile.orig
14c14
< if [ ! -d "$HOME" ]; then
---
> if [ ! -d $HOME ]; then
I'm running under Win2000, but I'm sure that's irrelevant.
