The answer is in the /usr/share/vim/vimrc file:
" Switch syntax highlighting on, when the terminal has colors
" Also switch on highlighting the last used search pattern.
if &t_Co > 2 || has("gui_running")
syntax on
set hlsearch
endif
hlsearch is turned on here...
Simply add
set nohlsearch
to your .vimrc and it will never do highlighting.
You could also 'fix' /usr/share/vim/vimrc, but if you upgrade vim next time (6.0
is arround the corner!) then chances are high that you will have hlsearch on
again ;-)

Betreff: Re: AW: highlighting in vi
So, this may be really simple, but how do you *un*highlight the results
of a search in the vim that comes with cygwin? Searching for a pattern
highlights every occurrance found. But that highlighting seems to
stick, even on other files, and even if I get a new shell through cygwin
(either before, or after closing the current).
Thanks,
Tom
