Perhaps there is. Can you really send bits at a time? I don't think so. The PC serial 
port is byte oriented. You can send a byte with some bits masked off. The serial port 
uses start and stop bits to synchronize. 

I'd be curious to know what devices can receive bits less than an 8 bit byte.
